A lot of people have got the impression that their careers are set in stone because they’re at a certain stage of life. While a lot of people are perfectly willing to simply take the average path and be mediocre, no law exists to make this happen. People will ultimately limit themselves in this regard.
If you want to be more successful than the average, you have to learn to filter out the silly ideas most people will try to hand you and take center stage. Who says you can’t be a C-level executive within a few years of graduating college if you have the ambition to do so? Who says you have to pretend you aren’t competent just because you’re young and energetic instead of older and more dogmatic? This over-reliance on dogma is something that a lot of older people need to consider when they’re thinking of hiring someone.
While you might not be able to convince a lot of older people that you’re as competent as someone twice your age or that you know everything about financial institutions like Plain Green Loans, you can convince other people your age that you can cut it. If all else fails, you can always bite the bullet and start your own business. If you can make a business work out of nothing, no one will be able to doubt you anymore. Of course, by that point you won’t be as young as you are today, and it’ll be too late for the entire idea of being a young executive.
